July 2013 - yeah, Match Reports died, but here's one from last nites Wednesday 30+ B Division: The Flash

@ 7/18/13 Match Report from last nite - here goes: You know those games where you do everything right, where you consistently beat the opposition to the ball, get off scores of shots and create loads of goal mouth scrambles, even almost every bad ref call goes your way, your GK hardly ever touches the ball, you only give up one corner and easily deal with it... and then you still f in lose! - yeah, well, that happened to Mellow Monsters last nite, v The Flash -  we drafted Mike Drummond in goal after 8 other goalies "couldn't make it" and it was his nite, stopped everything except a PK (thanks Andy!) and with Doug Scholl getting in the way of or clearing what seemed like half a dozen balls off the line, and with only 4 attempts of our own in the whole game, we still win 2-1 !! - Jay U turned in the first one with less than 4 mins left in the game with a sublime, professional looking no-nonsense finish off a great ball from Steve K, so of course we then give up a PK strait from the kick-off, then with the clock winding down we finally get a call from who has to be the worst ref in the World, Garvin drops the free kick over the PK spot and Joe Fullen nuts it in off the back post -  it was unreal, the yang to balance out a string of yings - celebration involved the usual beers in the parking lot where SF called the cops on us for not buying THEIR beer!! - so, responding to the several of you who suggested I complain about the Ref,  I seriously question the point of complaining to people who call cops on us for tailgating (a rare but useful American tradition) in the same spot we have virtually every Wednesday for over 20 years!!

The Flash play next Monday in make up game, win or lose we will be in the Final next Wednesday, playing guess who? -Pissed Off Monsters!!

October 2012 - there is popular demand to resume Match reports - so send them in!!

~0~

Welcome to Match Reports
I heard these Match Reports bear so little resemblance to the actual games they're not worth reading... methinks someone just didn't see their name enough! ~ Either way, I'm pleading for contributions ...we'll paste anything without editing...anyone who suffers through one of our games can be a flashscribe; maybe we ask the WAGs who show up to do something?, or worse still the Opponents, more than one has offered! - get involved, show your club mates what you think, send in your match reports or comments ~ Thanks - Terry

UPDATE Dec 2011 ~

December 2011

*FU2
, a hapless version of the Spring season team UWANKA, is damaging the fine reputation of all Flash teams in general, poor attendance, poor play and what in retrospect is a poorly balanced squad is a losing combo at any level, and for AllStars B level we just plain, SUCKED! ~ since changing the team name didn't work we'll need a further personnel shift, so please recruit 30 year old's (we're already oversubscribed with 40+ and 50+ beer swillers) -
THANK YOU

3rd Session

4/19 - FUFC v Red Britain - tied 3-3, although this scribe had a txt saying 10-4 with Makan scoring 8!! - jeff Lewis reports:  "
Russ was joking with Terry because Makan didn't show up.  We tied 3-3 in a hard fought game. Scott two goals, Russ 1

Red Brittain had a younger faster squad, but FUFC hung in and played solid defense. With tenacious D by FU, the fast paced game stayed at 0-0 for about 10 minutes. RB eventually broke through and put 2 of their weaker efforts in  to go up 2-0.  Both went through the legs of the guest keeper including a slow roller. But everybody kept doing their jobs with short lines and FU clawed back to 2-2.Scott had two great goals including a cracker from distance.
FU got called for a 2 minute penalty because a sub entered the field too quick for the ref's liking leading to a great defensive stand by FU. Under constant pressure we weren't able to get a sub in till deep in the penalty but everyone kept working and when the penalty ended it remained 2-2.

On the last goal, Scott pushed the ball up the field on a counter. Red Brittain was on their heels but feeling comfortable since it was 1 v 3 (FUFC was doing a lot of running and was lagging behind). Scott was about to have to take on half of RB's squad solo, but just in time Russ came sprinting up the middle from a deep run. With RB reacting too slow to Russ run, Scott slotted him a pass into the top of the area. Russ did a great job of reaching back for it, and slammed it low and hard inside the post, 3-2 FU!

Should have been a victory but for a costly error  from the keeper. Outside of his area he played the ball centrally upfield in the air where it was headed long range back into the goal.  Tough way to give up the last goal, but still a great job by everyone.

Flash report from Stick "...
We played a pretty weak team.  8 – 2 and we scored their second one!"

4/12 - FU v Tottenham - ends 3-2 in heartbreak for FU - absent Makan and with a couple of tired old subs (including Jonesy) trying to help out it was a brave effort and with just 4 minutes to go the game was still there to win - but a couple of last minute strikes from Spurs, who had fresh legs showing up throughout the game tipped the balance - heroics from Carlos (in goal) as usual, his first half performance set the tone for the determined  performance from all - with a full slate showing up for the balance of the session we'll do fine.

Flash demolished Apostrophe, a bulging bench made all the difference and it appears to be a division Flash can dominate with a good turnout each Tuesday.

First game, Wed 6th, report from Russ:
We lost 7-6 to one of the worst teams I’ve played against in a long time. Played first half a man short, with only myself, Joe Fullen, Steve and a nice guy who works with Doug Hoover called Kevin.  Picked up one of the Tottenham players for the 2nd half and almost pulled out a tie. Steve scored a cracking own goal into the top corner. I was tired from the night before, having played for Whistle Pigs in the 30+ final. It was a hard, well fought game with a lot of running from both sides. Ended 4-4 and WP won on penalties.

Apologies for a Lack of Match Reports
- t
he main scribe is indisposed until further notice - all contributions will be considered.

March 8th - FU v Whistlepigs -
following from two participants:

Was actually one of the better performances I’ve witnessed from  FU over the past few weeks (no thanks to my out of shape worthless play), but ultimately blew it with about 1 second remaining.  Score was tied 6-6 and they hit an upper 90 shot that bounced between the bar and the post, which the poor-excuse-for-a-ref Mike Barry called a goal even though he was standing (more like leaning his lazy ass against the wall) 25 yards away.  Amazing eyesight for an 85 year old man since I was about 5 feet away from the goal line and didn’t see it cross the line.

Gave up too many easy goals, of course, but overall okay performance I thought.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We played well, tied at 6 with 20 seconds left, we had an odd man rush to score the game winner and a backpost tap-in was all but apparent but the pass was behind the runner.  They took the ball to midfield and struck a blast that hit the left post, top of goal, right post and Carlos caught it.  The referee called a goal from his midfield perch.  Barry ferked us in the end.
Feb 9th -
Flash football reached a new low last nite as Uwanka disintegrated after already proving they just couldn't play the game to begin with! ~ for all the effort that was being expended it was a sorry ass performance, there's no individual culprits worth mentioning as all must bear the humiliation of a 6-0 defeat.
And that's it for this week, no other Flash Club teams had games, and not much coming up ~ except tracking down players who still owe their team fees!
Jan 25th - Uwanka lived up to their name again with another shameful display - what did they do wrong? - just about everything - there was a fair bit of effort expended but very little football on display as Uwanka were rolled over by an enthusiastic but uninteresting team called MFC.
Flash II on the other hand seemed to have control of their match early on although it was tough to see much structure in their approach - little Roberto (as opposed to big {old} Roberto, the Brazilian one) was one exception, his speed and willingness to go both ways when he was on the floor should have inspired more of the F.II lads, but as the game wore on there were just too many lapses in concentration, not enough organization, and it ends with a close defeat to Hooligans.
FUFC had a bye week - next week we have strange game DAYS! - Check the Schedules
Jan 18th - FUFC v Upper 90 -
Should have, would have, but didn't - defend for 48 mins that is - was tied up 4-4 when brain farts exploded and 4 mins later it was 8-4 with about 5 mins left - c'mon boys, we can play better than that! - U.90, with only one sub, looked like they wanted it more and got what they eventually deserved - FU owe Steve a big thanks for playing goalie where he was outstanding in this losing effort - Coach takes the blame, disorganized match-ups had our players in wrong positions to play to their strengths, I admit I thought with the full line up we had compared to their one sub we'd eventually wear them out...
Flash played Planks who eventually overpowered a decent Flash line up - anyone see this one?, if so, please write it up!
Uwanka lived up to their moniker v a team of all last-minute-sideline-scrapped-together-subs from the looks of things - but when early on when Quested slammed one in from a great cross field pass from Steve Kim (fresh of his in-goal efforts in the A game) you might have thought Uwanka's would have an easy time of it - didn't happen, missed all the chances on other breakaways and time after time a lapse in defensive marking gave Art of War an open tap in, which to be honest they always took with some aplomb, and the red boys just couldn't get it going..nothing...couldn't control the ball in the middle, or pretty much anywhere, a shameful performance...maybe next week we give Travis (our GK) some proper help and we find a way to move the ball to OUR players!
Jan 4 2011
Uwanka lose to Flash II -
In their third match up in four weeks these teams looked a little bored as it started, and while Uwanka took an early lead, and appeared to be cruising as the first half went along, it wasn't long into the 2nd half when it all went wobbly for them as F.II strung together a couple of good sub rotations and scored four goals in quick succession to take it to 7-4, and they never looked back, Uwanka couldn't get back the early game mood and F.II get revenge for the last several match-ups!
FUFC played Gitches - and despite the Buckeye game accounting for several other teams canceling their matches, or the teams that did show clearly having slim rosters, both these two teams had more than a full line of subs for the opening game of 2011 - FU had a new guy named Makan, who looks just like the old one except for having no hair, he brought out a friend, and with Josh Schofield getting back into playing the FU team looks good for this session, but whatever it was that kept this game from busting out I cant say, didn't watch it, ends in a tie, Marius pulls up lame, and the rest of the session will have some tough match-ups too!
Flash FC v MFC -
20+ years of asking the lads to bring out recruits finally paid off! ~ Flash FC had 20 players last nite for the MFC game, wonders never...
Despite a crowded sideline and the usual enthusiasm to play a full 80 mins an orderly sub rotation contributed to to perhaps the most disciplined performance of the season so far - to be true it was a rocky first 10/15 mins when MFC blew three good scoring chances, poor marking was allowing them too much time on the ball and they kept the pressure squarely in our half, but a well played counter-attack involving new recruit Jay, Heath and finished by Joe was clinical and established a winners attitude among the boys in red. When Jon2 and Souch subbed into the outside back positions they quickly established a tight marking regime and the game took on a new dimension, we stared to win balls back early, managed to find room and pass it around, and on the break always looked dangerous - as the first half played out Flash score two more, and would have had a fourth on the stroke of the half when Joe skied a rebound from 4 yards about 60' over the bar!
With a comfortable lead the inevitable 'foot off the pedal' occurred, MFC to their credit stepped up the pressure a notch and when we allowed their 2nd forward to run across the imaginary 25 yard line area he unleashed a blistering left foot smash into the top corner of our net to re-established their hope of points. The tempo picked up with both teams putting in an extra effort, but top quality play was sporadic most of the time as the 2nd half went on, the ref intervened to call a innocent knock a yellow card on Joe F, and then blew the call when the victim of that accident did a flying two-handed push from behind as Joe broke free on goal - should've been a red - game finished up 3-1 - if everyone comes back and the other MIA's show we'll have about 25 shirts out there June13! - let's see!!
Message to Soccer First:
- ZERO TOLERANCE FOR BAD REFS!
Hi Karen
Reffing is tough, but not so tough as playing with bad refs!
Happy to uphold the a tolerance policy with refs, especially if it's a two way policy! - i.e., don't screw up our games and we wont point out the obvious shortcomings of the refs!
Anyway, here goes, one of the refs last nite (new boy, nice lad, but not a clue) was so poor he destroyed the game - virtually every time he got involved his call was wrong - the other ref was hapless, couldn't blow his whistle hard enough for anyone to hear, but he only got about 50% of his calls wrong, which is normal for most amateur refs I think
So it started with an off-side goal, the opposition couldn't believe their luck, their player is so obviously offside when the ball came to him standing inside the 6 yard line that even none of their defenders at the other end of the field thought it was a goal! - our players were letting him stand in an obviously offside position - but the ref, who was inline with the play, apparently didn't see it - OK, stuff happens
He then hands out a couple of soft yellow cards - OK, we get it, keeping it tight, but there was no consistency as when the same things happen again there's no ref involvement, just puzzled players wondering what the heck is going on - OK, this stuff happens
Just to prove he might not know the off-side rule he gets involved again, our GK boots a long ball, the only people in the opposition side of the field are three defenders spread across the mid-field line, two keeping tabs on our only forward who is in our half, he takes off AFTER the kick, blows by their defenders, as he gains control of the ball by now near the 18yd line the refs blows him offside - f.in unbelievable!! -if he had been offside (he wasn't) it would have been back near the half way line, but he gives the offside down by the 18 - he's got no clue!!
At half time I did suggest to the other team we just play on without refs - hindsight proves we should have!
One of our guys is tackled from behind, I'm not sure if it was meant as malicious, but it was a dangerous tackle and clearly a foul with the player not able to get up for a minute - no whistle, the game goes on despite lots of shouting at the refs and between players - the two players involved start having words with each other, others join in and a minor melee breaks out, just words, no-one being stupid EXCEPT THE REFS who hadn't stopped play till everyone else just gave up playing to sort out the players arguing themselves - then our genius ref tries to sort it out, now, how he missed the foul when it happened on his side of the field 50' in front of him, with the ball at the players feet, with a slide tackle from behind is beyond anyone who was there - but even if he didn't see it, he's making no sense to either team, he's not made any kind of call, he's engaging players in conversations, when eventually some of them point out what a f.in blind ref he is (me included), others call him f.in stupid, at least four (admittedly rude) insults hurled at him one after another, what does he do? - awards a drop ball and a red card to someone he thinks insulted him - the guy he cards did say to the players on the side line "this ref must be f.in blind" - a sentiment it was difficult not to agree with - well, apparently he's partially deaf and stupid too, how he missed all the direct insults and screaming in his face, but sends off someone talking to his mates on the bench, is beyond me -
After the game the ref did tell me he had a great time - this is troubling (understatement!) - said he was just doing his best - again, troubling, because if this is his best the next time he refs it may be even worse!
As I said, seems like a nice lad and he handled himself remarkably well given the vitriol in his direction, but he's not ready to ref 'mens' leagues - the one good thing he said to me was he's out of town next week!
Respectfully
Terry, for
Flash Football Club
2011 Outdoor gets underway!
Sorry that Match Reports fell off this season - I get calls each week asking how we did. Will try harder for the Summer Session - CONTRIBUTIONS ALWAYS ACCEPTED!
The Flash lost 2-1 in the B Division Final to Gitches -
a close game proved The Flash could be the "top of the rest" after Division 1 teams are excluded, and with a squad whose average age is at least 10 years more than the rest of the division (ex Flash II !!) we had a fairly decent season - a missed PK and the usual blown calls by the refs contributed to a disappointing Final result, but virtually everyone on the team returns for the Summer Session where the league teams are reshuffled - Golden Monkeys first game out Aug 3rd, 7:25pm
Flash II play their opener 6pm Wednesday Aug 3rd
The Flash
opened v Libertores, who had several players who speak English, but apparently none that understood 30+ meant the entire team should be at least 30 years old - nevertheless, like The Flash, they were clearly a 2nd division team, and like most Latino teams they all had a nice football kit (blue) - The Flash have a monumental roster this year, a necessity after last years debacles, and true to form at least half of them couldn't make it for the opening game! - but thanks to the state of several fields other games were cancelled and we picked up Russ & James from Club CMH, Marcus made an appearance and even played goalie for the 2nd half, Billy showed giving everyone a smile and by kick-off we had 4 subs! - Dougie donned the gloves in the absence of Carlos (and backup Romeo) and it was apparent early on Libertores really only had a couple of decent players, one little nifty player up front was causing havoc when he was on the ball and if he'd had any help might have hurt us a few times, but with a solid starting back line anchored by Smiity and Russ, with new to town Mike Nelson (from MI) and Eduardo we looked OK; James, Bill, Dr. Mark R. and Scott started across the middle and with Mark Barrett (the Scot) up front soon accompanied my Marco (been working the hamburger joints from the look of him) we had a decent squad - less tahan 10 mins in Mark B breaks free, pro looking finish, and it may have only been another 5 mins before Mark R finishes another - subs Marcus (Bachmann) , Andy T, Quested started rotating through, and the latter after two touches worked the ball thru Billy who set him up with a sitter and at 3-0 the game looked like it was over -
Soccer Last have some new refs, unbelievably they may be worse than last seasons versions evidenced by missing what has to be the clearest case for a penalty anyone has ever seen, Terry was dull-dozed from behind on a corner, way before the ball got anywhere near him, after spitting out grass and mud his pleas to both idiots with whistles went unheeded - later, in what might have been a make up call, Mike N chopped down the little nifty one, and it too was ignored, although I suspect it was just plain incompetence on the part of the refs, although, truth be told, the ancient one of the two got most of the offside calls right - perhaps that was just dumb luck! - as the 2nd half wore on The Flash were getting sloppy, James and others kept pushing up and getting themselves out of position as players sought their own form of glory, had everyone stuck to a simple game plan of possessing the ball it could have been a rout, as it was, several breakaways faltered when guys found themselves stranded without support, or shots went astray, but enough good work ensured a clean sheet at the back and Mark B popped in another lobbing their keeper who had a tendency to come way off his line - ends, satisfyingly, 4-0.
Flash II played Gitches - same division! - Gitches have at least 3 or 4 players who should be playing Division 1, Ryan Fairchild for one, so it was a long nite for Stick, Joseph and other ancient Flashsters, final was 6-2 to the greenies.
2010 -> Twas an ignoble season for both Flash II and The Flash in 30+ as aging squads, lack of top quality recruits and any number of other excuses contributed to lacklustre performances and disappointing seasons....at least on the field, off the pitch Flash FC exhibited all the conviviality they are renowned for with strong turnouts around beer loaded coolers and a thankful new tradition of food after most games!....kudos to Bucket whose truck bed or trailer signifies there's something good to munch on as donated brews go down the throats of the assorted milieu like Nani in a .hit kicking contest.... when outdoor starts in the Spring both teams need an overhaul...and this is only B division stuff too!
2011 Outdoor - over at last!
Results this session have been dismal, both 40+ teams performances so poor at times I despair, whatever happened to our proven winning abilities is hard to say, but we need to restore some pride in the upcoming Summer Season.
No More Wankers
- not blaming the subs we need to recruit each week, but if we just had enough Flash club players show up for each game we'd be doing better than when the assorted subs get involved - know what I mean? !!
See League Results & Tables here - no game reports, nothing good to report!
2011 Indoor
May 1st and May 8th -
FUFC implode.  FU.
Everyone looking forward to Outdoor? - we need a bit more dedication if we expect to start winning tee shirts again - One bit of news: Mel Spangler is back! - Welcome Mel - long time, mate!
April 26 - Easter moved games to a Monday nite this week, Flash took on Gray Wolves and both sides showed up with benches bulging with subs - you have to give credit to the Grey Wolves, with Mr. Juras (late 60's) , Ted (been 70 something for a few years now), Leo, Paul and assorted other gray hairs they are the gold standard for aging footballers, and for the first half they put up a decent fight, moved the ball around when given a chance, and with Darren and a couple of others smashing long range shots even managed to look like scoring a few times, ended 8-3 as Flash rumbled along and finished enough chances for a comfortable 3 points. Drew looks like he bust a finger grabbing a ball that should never have been allowed to get by him but a returning Quested had gifted Wolves the ball with no-one behind him, but Stick and Co, with Souch, Jeff Lewis, Roberto, Troy, Rob, Anh, Joseph, Bruce, Carlos and Bachmann were always destined to secure this one.
FU played Chaos, who eventually managed to scrape together enough subs and did a credible job of holding FU to only a few goals in the first half, but as the game wore on, and even with Fu losing players to accumulated aches and pains, the squad was just too strong - with Drew icing down his hand Carlos did his usual good job in the nett, and with Jon Tew, Mike Higgins, Russ & Smitty joining Marcus, Bruce, Souch, Terry and Jeff Lewis all warmed up from the earlier game, the final was never in doubt, ended 7-1.
April 17th - With the indoor spring session well under way we're missing quite a few reports, but this past weekends action was worth getting up early for...FU took on Los Latinos in the 8:25am kick-off with both sides controlling their seasons destiny with the ability to win the Championship by winning this day and winning out for the session - this week FU had more than a full roster with Drew getting back into his weekly goalmouth work, while Los Latinos raided some of the NOOR guys to ensure they had a strong side too...so it was a fast and furious start to a very tough match-up with both sides determined to stamp their authority on the other and if you were blinking much you'd have missed some great action....about 5 mins in, with Latinos having created the most and best chances so far, Carlos found himself poorly marked and notched in the opening goal for FU, for someone who spends most in time in goal it was an impressive take, which he then bettered with a fine upper 90 slap about 5 mins later to give FU a two goal (one shot) lead, but the Latinos we're not going to roll over and repeatedly found a way to put pressure on the FU goal, and despite fine work from Spermie, Mark, Smitty, Holtom and Drew coming back into form there was no sense this was a runaway for FU - Latinos get one back only to see FU scramble in another (was it Jeff Lewis?, who finished his one-on-one with an expertise he doesn't always possess) and as the 2nd half rolled on it was clear the final outcome was far from certain - the FU midfield was benefiting from a full turnout this week, Souch, Mike Higgins, Scott (superb in the early going), Jon 2 and Russ ensured the marking was tight and kept the both way pressure on the entire time, so despite Latinos always looking dangerous, and even notching a couple in a late flurry of a comeback, when they had the chance FU put away chances in a style we've not been accustomed to in recent times, Carlos banged in a 3rd for his hat-trick, someone else completed a move after good possession and passes, and when Mike slammed home the last one with a few mins on the clock with an emphatic 'you aint catching this shot' it was all she wrote for Latinos losing 6-3.
Flash played NOOR and after about 15 mins it looked they were out of it, trailing by 3 or 4, despite a full bench, there didn't appear to be much chance of a come back - but that's why you're supposed to stick around, ended 7-7 - hope someone did watch it all and can fill us in on what happened!! - Must have been a good job by Stick and the boys.
Spring Indoor started with another FlashClash, both sides barely managed to corral a squad by kick-off but Flash found a couple to have three on the bench...meanwhile despite only one sub FUFC looked set to dominate as they cruised to a 5-1 lead with clinical fast break finishes that despite Drew's best efforts just kept finding the back of the net...but in true Flash fashion they never gave up and perhaps it was the extra subs but as the 2nd half wore on the tide was turning with Flash picking up one goal after another, then at 6-3 FU popped in their first of the 2nd half and must have taken the foot off the pedal with what looked like a comfortable lead, only to see a two pointer (which looked suspiciously like a tipped cross) float over everyone and slip in the back of the nett and it's game on..Flash notch another but with time running it FU do just enough to hang on for the win, 7-6
March 27 - Jeff Lewis reports:
Flash lost 6-4
FUFC beat Noor 6-4. In the first half we passed the ball around them smartly and had most of the possession taking a 5-0 lead into half time. They played much better in the second half finishing the chances they had and pulled back a few. Although we dropped off for the first 10 minute or so of the second half, the second half wasn't as lopside as it appears from score. We missed some good chances including two near perfect chances missed by yours truly  that would have given us a little bit more cushion.
Goals:  Russ, Keith (I think a single and a two pointer), myself, Carlos.
Apologies for a lack of Match Reports ~ the main scribe is unable to make games at this time.
Feb 27th - FUFC v NOOR saw the two undefeated teams playing with the season on the line, so the boys in red needed a good, solid performance this week - while the first half was close in terms of chances there were mishaps that gifted NOOR a couple of goals on the break, and in retrospect they set a tone that played out repeatedly - despite Tom R doing a bang up job guesting in goal for the first half and BBarr taking over for the run in it was with misplaced confidence FU begun the second half, despite good intentions it was only 'hope' that was out there as FU failed to capitalize on their opportunities, this being a day when no-one could seem to find a finishing touch, and despite NOOR having a 2 minute then a 5 minute penalty FU had no killer instinct or apparently anything resembling a plan when the other team was a man down..and guess what happens when when you allow that?... yup, you get punished...Noor scored 8 times this Sunday, albeit two came from a fluke long ball lob that landed on Matts back and slipped in the net, but by then they'd already taken advantage of FU gifting up the ball 4 times and allowing NOOR to execute in front of the goal in a manner that FU simply never matched, their goalie hardly had to save a shot the entire game - the ref was responsible for one screw up when Scott was knocked to the ground and seeing the ball cradled in his arm he awarded Noor a free kick while FU were expecting the call their way, in the ensuing confusion Noor walked it in essentially sealing FU's fate as despite appearing to have the upper hand for long stretches the aforementioned finishing, or lack thereof, meant FU took a whipping and left with heads hung low in dejection and misery. ~ some say its all about the fun of the game...rubbish, it's about winning!
Meanwhile, Flash played Gigondas in the early match and never seriously looked threatened, Ruben had a couple knocked by him but rarely looked troubled with Flash winning 5-2, or was it 6? - either way, the lads looked like they were having a good time...winning does that!
Feb 13 - The first FLASHCLASH of the year wasn't a very pretty affair with FU taking the early lead and looking like they could out play Flash with quick early movement, but Flash never gave up, pushed the game and in the end got a couple of goals to close the final score to 6-4. FU recruited Duct Tape Tom to goal with Carlos in goal for Flash, and despite giving up 6 goals he stopped plenty more, including a couple of wide open 1-on-1's to his credit, but perhaps it as the lack of defensive transition that cost them as FU made plenty of chances with good ball movement going forward and with a more precision on their last touches should have had a few more goals - still, no serious injuries although Matt apparently bust his little finger in a freak clash with Russ....standout's this week Scott who always seemed to be in the right position, Mark with a tidy defensive effort and the ref who uncharacteristically hardly got a call wrong! ~ NO GAME FEB 20th
Feb 6th - Flash v Horsemen
never looked like being a tough match up and anytime you have more than two full lines for a 7:30am kick-off you might do well - 11-1 is doing well! Stick & Co spanked the dire looking, weirdly named, old guys led by Doc, the guy with legs so bandy you could knock a beach ball thru them without touching his knees ~ someone remarked they'd give it up if they were so obviously out matched, but you have to admire the effort and determination you see out @ Soccer First on Sunday mornings, no matter who's playing.
FUFC played Gigondas and had 8 subs to the Gigs 1 at kickoff, so you'd have thought a complete domination was in order...and pretty much that's what happened except the Gigs never gave up, they really did hustle the whole game and when it was 7-2 they even made bit of a come back, but the game had really been over for quite a while at that point- this week saw another recruit pop his 40+ cherry as Culligan took advantage early with a hat-trick  in the first 5 FU goals, as like last week FU put together a decent display of early passes, kept the ball on the ground, and when the transition was good always looked capable of scoring, Gigondas had Duct-tape in his usual role, and in addition to clearly a worn out body (Goalkeeping is tough on any frame) he still appears to have TB if all his coughing is a guide..still, a good workout even if trying to get 15 guys playing time is the hardest part of the event!
Jan 30th -
FUFC played Tottenham, two undefeated teams with title aspirations in a League where a single loss can cost you a shot at a first place finish ~ FU took the floor with a full line up of subs while Spurs still looked strong with only 4 this week – about 3 mins in Jeff Lewis top corners one from a wide angle, then 90 seconds later Bruce gets a rebound off the wall with the keeper caught off his line and another minute later someone grabs yet another, it’s 3-0 to the red lads and Tottenham don’t know what’s hit ‘em – FU take a line change and two mins later a long ball pass misses its target (Matt) only to see the keeper misjudge it off the wall where it bounces in off his legs for a two pointer and FU lead 5-0! ~ there’s only been 6 minutes of play and Shamrocks look devastated while FU buoyed by confidence put on a display the likes of which they rarely accomplish these days. Jeff Lewis gets another before leaving with a torn calf and Souch, Russ, Scott and Diego keep the ball moving in a fashion FU would do well to imitate more often, it could easily have been 10+ to nil at the half and while a 7 zip lead is impressive at any level it was even more remarkable this week as they out played Spurs on every level. The 2nd half was another story, Spurs get their act together and really make a game of it but FU always looked the most likely to score, they squandered several chances but still had a few that come off including a four one touch move involving four players to make it 8-0 before Tottenham manage to get a couple for the extra effort they were putting in – but it was never to be, Quested nuts in a header from a Diego toe-punt bullet cross, someone else scores again and it ends 11-2. A great performance from everyone, anchored at the back with Marcus, Smitty, Jon2 and Spermie in front of Carlos, the FU squad just had their bio-rhythms lined up this week…. it’ll be interesting to see if they play like that again!
Flash played NOOR and just couldn't get the ball in the nett, ends 7-2 - someone write up a report, will yer?
Jan 23rd FU v United - 7:30am accounted for the tired looking bodies out there, but FU had a strong enough contingent to see off United 7-4 in an unspectacular performance to remain undefeated..so far!
Flash played Shamrock Rovers and early on went ahead 2-0 and could have nailed another if Quested could have danced over the prone GK, but his miss, along with a few others begun the turn of the tide with Rovers sticking to their game plan and eventually overpowering Flash every time they failed to mark up and notched in 7 unanswered goals to go top of the league!
Jan 16  Flash v Pounders - It's tough making a 7:30am kick-off when it bloody freezing outside and you may have a 40 minute ride to the game, so that explains why both teams barely scrapped together 3 subs by midway thru the 2nd half where the score was locked at 4-3 to the redboys, and that's how it ended for Stick & Co, 3 points for their opening 2011 season - if anyone saw the game please write it up ~ thanks!~
FU took on Los Latinos, a new team but they didn't have anyone new, in fact they could have done with a few more bodies, Luis Banderas has most of his amigos playing, and they've picked up Paolo and another occasional flashster (Oscar, is it???), but with Duct-tape in goal and too few defenders their squad should have been over powered by a full compliment from FU - even without Bill, Bryan, Matt, Mike H, Diego & Jimmie FU went man-for-man with Roberto & Greg warmed up from their Flash game subbing, Russ joined in this week, and along with Souch, Scott and Jon2 you'd have thought FU had this one in the bag, especially when Bruce took advantage of Duct-tape charging out of his box in the opening few minutes to gift FU the opener, but Los Lats got it together, showed they could move the ball better than most of the old men teams at soccer last and despite FU usually closing them down were rewarded with a two-pointer from a shot going 15 feet wide that smacked Roberto in the head to deflect back across to the empty side of the goal - FU kept up the pressure, Quested eventually notched the tying goal over Duct-tape who'd once again gone to the mat, and then despite some ugly skills with both teams losing the ball and showing poor control the game tightened up - fast forward to the last 10 mins, Latinos have the edge, they've managed to punish lax marking and taken their chances on the break and lead 4-2, FU get it back close, Scott has an open goal tap in on the back post after the keeper fails to get up, meanwhile Souch is terrorizing them and FU even has the advantage of Los Lats having two guys in the penalty box, but the last touches are failing and FU find themselves down by one with 5 mins left - then the pressure starts to pay off, FU get the tie and in the rush of enthusiasm force in another a minute later and hang on for a 6-5 win..phew, we woz lucky not to drop points!
