WINDSOR May 2011
Son-of-a..... Fish & the lads do it again! - three years in a row, trip to Canada ends with Columbus bringing home the Teutonia Championship, an impressive feat regardless of the competition - this year only 5 teams competed, Makan Keita played, so maybe it's no surprise - to all the lads who think he's past his prime, so what? - we win virtually everything when he plays with us!

2010

fado Cup
Flash win 4 - 3 over Wolves in the Final
After losing to Wolves 6-4 in Saturdays 2nd match, following a comfortable win over Atlanta, Flash still qualified for the weather shortened quarter final v Austin, winning 5-1. The subsequent semi-final saw more thunderclouds looming so 12 minute halves were all we got and all we needed to see off D.C. 6-0 setting up a rematch v Wolves in the Final on Sunday morning. Notables on Saturday included the usual regulars showing up to drink and support, man-for-man sub rotations working like clockwork, some great individual plays including Marco with an impressive twist and back heel to himself setting up a nice volley he finished for a goal, Colby and Marco doing good job of playing the big striker roll, a 4 goal haul from Ben Murray in the loss to Wolves, Billy and others hitting the woodwork with regularity and a building camaraderie between players as they got used to each other and started playing to strengths. It was bloody hot, head numbingly hot, one guy from Atlanta was taken to hospital with dehydration ~ but the facility was excellent, iced water bottles everywhere, free food, air-conditioned bus with kegs, beer passes, a big Red Bull tent, massage therapists, Fado' really put on a great event.... and no-one moaned about the refs (surprising with Mike Barry in full form all weekend!). The temperature next morning for the final was a good 15 - 20 degree's cooler, and while a few hangovers seemed to be lingering the Flash boys picked up Jan-Micheal with Billy and Ryan McK out hurt and Marco a no-show - Makan, who'd only made a brief late appearance on Saturdays did show thanks to a wake-up call from Smitty, and the final got underway with Flash controlling the tempo and playing good tight football most of the time. It was the lapses that hurt, despite taking an early lead, and seemingly finding plenty of opportunities it was sloppy marking that gave some of the speedy young Wolves guys chances, and while they didn't get many their efficiency, as we'd seen the day before, showed as they went up 2-1, then despite tying it up Flash went down 3-2 with about 6 mins left. I think it was Ben who tied it up with a well taken blast from wide outside the box, then Flash held on till the whistle setting up 10 minute overtime (no 'golden goal'). It should have been obvious to any seasoned watcher that Wolves lacked the discipline, team work and panache that Flash were now starting to display, but when Flash got a free kick just outside the box it was really nothing special, there had been plenty of squandered dead balls throughout the tourny, the small goals, short fields all made it tough to squeeze anything over, thru or around a decent wall where good keepers mopped up the slops...but Flash had Makan, he waited while their wall got tight and then threaded it with phenomenal pace past the end of the wall and off the back of the goal support where it bounded back over everyone's head before anyone had even turned around...it's 4-3 and Flash mopped it up from there and win the Fado Cup again!

Columbus rivals Wolves may consider themselves a little unlucky, they certainly missed a few, but no-more than Flash who'd had a dubious offside rule out a nice finish from Ryan F., and even saw Kyle lob wide of an open net; while their young players displayed some surprising quickness and passion, took advantage of the few opportunities we presented, it was never going to be enough once Flash had that go-ahead goal and ran their strongest lines for the last 5 minutes. The defeat certainly crushed their spirit (till the free beer started flowing..) as was evident from the low hung head's and no eye contact, but they proved worthy rivals, deserve praise for good sportsmanship and will be at it again next year...no matter where they hold it...it looks like VEGAS is in with a shout!

Geovanni & Ben Murray were voted Most Valuable Players by their team mates and both recognized during the Cup Presentation (it was refilled several times with Heineken), they win customized, top quality soccer shirts. While each distinguished themselves it really was an effort by everyone to play team ball that made the difference. With virtually every other team praising Flash as the class of the event, and even Mr. Barry handing out compliments, all the Flash players can take away the thrill of having played well in a great event.

Well done Fado' Cup Champions 2010!

The Champions Return!

& Win AGAIN! ~ Well done Fish & Co, great job and a new legacy!
This year 15 brave souls took the annual pilgrimage to the land of maple leafs, Bluey's, gambling and a dances where you sit. With Keith Fisher taking the reins and discovering you need 30 names on a list 1 month before the event to make sure a quorum actually shows come the weekend, this years Teutonia Tournament pulled 4 teams, the Soux Sainte Marie folks who have about an 8 hour drive from the UP to Windsor, Toledo, Columbus Flash and the hosts. Both Teutonia and Columbus won their first two games on Saturday where the whole group found a British club to watch the USA v England World Cup match before returning for the Saturday evening game. So with two undefeated teams they opted for a noon Sunday Final, the Columbus boys win it 2-0, all get black Champions shirts...Makan was inspirational as usual with 5 goals despite being marked by 4 or 5 players all the time, and while someone decided to take a swipe at him the locals with Fish in charge helped quell the anxiety.....and for more info you'll need to speak with someone who actually played........picture will be in our gallery soon...

Managers Wanted!

Terry has retired from entering Flash teams in the Columbus Cup at Soccer First - aspiring Managers are welcome to have a go

We canceled plans for The Champions Cup tournament slated for mid-August - we were unable to get good fields on a good date ~ more to follow in 2011 - this if for top class 30 and 40 teams

2009

The 2009 Columbus Cup @ Soccer.... Last!

Started in 1991 The Columbus Cup has usually attracted good teams in the 30 men's division, this year Cincy Utd were joined by Mason Pub as the only two visiting teams, Pittsburg (Tri-State) dropped out with Mike Lawrence scrambling together a replacement squad from the locals for a 5 team, round-robin format.

Last years winners Fushnickens opened up against our team (CCFFC), hans & terry had assembled 21 players for the 4 games and for this first match had 7 subs waiting their turn versus what looked like a very strong Fushnickens side. Then, despite having most of the play, the good guys (that’s us!) find themselves down 1 nil from a corner where Dougie knocks down a player who’d given up hope of reaching the cross, and they get a PK. Several minutes later in what someone called a make-up call CCFFC get a handball PK, it’s all tied up after Makan notches the first of his weekend score-fest. Game was friendly enough but tough as you’d expect in the first match of a tourney, and while Rosebery’s lads always seemed capable of springing a surprise it never happened, CCFFC score another (Makan toe punt from almost no good angle…) and then again and at 3-1 set about closing it down. Result was eventually 3-2  and someone (was it Russ?) renames them Douchnickens! - the next one in the afternoon is versus Mason Pub who’d tied Cincy Utd in their opener…and just as you’d expect, with a 21 man squad, in the 2nd game we only had 10 players return for the kick-off! …Chad went in goal, GregArenstein got a call up, thing’s were desperate, even Quested played providing Hans so many chuckles and one line insults he almost started to enjoy himself!…and Terry didn’t disappoint, he missed everything coming his way, no matter, Zack scores 2, and we get two more and roll over the boys from Mason, Ohio 4 zip or maybe it was 4-1. - during the game another C.Cup founder Bobby Kirkland showed up, drank all our beer and then pissed off to the Crew game!

Sunday AM, Cincy Utd at one win & one tie, CCFFC with full compliment including Makan, Bill Gross, Simon and everyone from the first day (Chad, Carlos, Mike P, Jan-Michel, Garvin, Dougie, Culligan, Russ, Todd H, Sergio, Nannu, Conor & Zack ….who’d I miss?) and it didn’t look to be a one sided match, even in the first 6 or 7 minutes….but it went that way as we score 9 and keep a clean sheet…. Not a lot of emotion at this point (heard several times -> “hey, does anyone remember when this used to be a good tournament?) despite having an insurmountable lead and basically already the tourney champs, nevertheless most players return for the final match with the local lads led by Mario, the Lawrence bros, Jalal and other assorted soccer bandits, and it almost turns into a scrimmage, which it would have been but for the whining at the ref, the “we don’t need no players”, the “hey, I’m just stronger than him, it wasn’t a foul” and other sportsmanlike maneuvers… one of which earned them a PK… didn’t matter CCFFC knock in 8 goals, Simon scores a couple for each team after switching at half-time anyway…. it was a bit of a bore-fest but eventually the good guys got the Tee Shirts …. (and apparently we can’t drink a beer a watch footie either!!!)… Do we play next year? – maybe.......... but maybe we just do something else!!

Windsor - Teutonia Club - June 13/14  35 -> Columbus FFC Win the Teutonia Cup!!

It was the 80th Anniversary of the Windsor Teutonia Football Tournament.. yes, they started this event in 1929! (Wonder who played during WWII??!)  - Anyway, we won it! - Three solid performances resulted in wins on Saturday; 4-1 over Toledo Baverians, 5-1 over Sault Sainte Marie Rheintals and then 4-2 over London German Canadians (in a match where Makan Keita proved his world class qualities, he scored every goal unassisted, he even had to win the balls himself as the 19 other Columbus players who rotated thru the game seemed unable to get him the ball, more on Makan later..).... it was clear after the Saturday games the Columbus team looked the class of the event but they had yet to play the hosts, the teutonic, blitzkreig style big boys from Windsor, plus the Sunday noon time match-up, billed as "Match of the Day", was versus undefeated Brantford FC who'd stomped on all of their Saturday rivals, including a 2-zip win over the usual tourney Champions the aforementioned Hosts....  so it was with some useful pregame respect for the opposition that our lads started that game and picked up where they'd left off the day before, disciplined play, using team mates and when Makan notched in a goal mouth scramble, stealing the opportunity from Smitty and Greg, it was just a question of keeping our cool - and that's what happened, we finished up another great move down the right and into the middle (Javier, I think) and proceed undefeated in the final match v Windor needing only a tie to secure the whole darn thing.... that's how it ended, 0-0 was enough to give Columbus an insurmountable lead using the 10 point system they use (6 for a win, 1 for each goal up to three, 4 for a tie and 1 for a shutout) ...and then it was just about drinking more beer!

Notable mentions should go to everyone: our two GK's Drew Collins and Chad from Dayton never made a costly mistake; the stopper sweeper unit of Luis O, Jason Mica & Holtom who finished up there when Mark Batman (Dayton) got injured, their solid performance in every game provided the stability that manifested itself throughout the squad; the backs Aaron (I'm driving) Sellers, Spermie & Smitty kept it tight and almost mistake free; wingers Souch "hey, I'm Canadian, eh!", Neal & Scottie D provided speed, width and good tackling throughout the weekend; Arenstein had a blinder and scored at least two, played from a central midfield role with Joe D and Joe H on Saturday where his hustle was inspiring, and he kept it up on the Sunday from the forward position when Makan dropped to a midfield role in search of more balls...and of course Javier, who, in his usual style, was running around guys all weekend, on a bum ankle to boot, and he even managed to actually find the nett with a few goals too, perhaps his best move was a sweet thru pass (who expected him to pass??? !) to Scottie "I aint paying all that for just one dance" Downing in one of the Saturday games which he finished with a bang... Fishy limped around but managed to contribute several good minutes, and on a weekend when we used 20 players it was clearly the presence of Makan "I'm coming next year" (his first visit to a gentlemen's club!) that made the difference - a quote heard on the side line in a heavily accented eastern european tongue, "hey that Columbus team is winning again, and guess who scored? - yup, that schwartzer got another one!" - Makan gets 8 of our 15 goals and is now a legend in Canada... and he's facebooking for that tall one from the Ivory Coast....remember, what happens in Windsor, stays in Windsor!

A Big Thank You to the Windsor Teautonia Club for hosting a terrific tournament

Fado Cup - In Philadelphia July 18/19 - "A kick in the bells!"

Columbus Cup - July 18/19 - 30 and 40

2008 -

Octoberfest - Milwaukee: Dieter Teuber, a long time Columbus soccer fixture.  Old German guy from Dublin.  He’s organized a trip to the Bavarian Soccer Club of Milwaukee during Oktoberfest, 9/19,20,21  (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday) to play an over 50 tournament.  Apparently he lived in Milwaukee some years ago and has been talking about doing this for years.  We are going to roster about 15-16 players and it promises to be a good time of soccer, drinking and fellowship.   It’s a pretty informal setup, but it sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun. This is about the camaraderie, fun and good German beer! We are trying to pick up a couple more people, so if you know anyone else let me know.  This is primarily 50 , but we can roster a few guys 48 or 49.Thanks again, Jon  email: baggio@columbus.rr.com  ~---> Jon Weiss: 6400 Chippenhook Court ~ Dublin, OH 43017 ~ 614-596-5904 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting            614-596-5904      end_of_the_skype_highlighting

Akron GFS - July 5th & 6th - 40 ~ This one aint happening, too few players available -

The Crew Fantasy Camp - July 17th (Thursday) info below**

Columbus Cup - July 19/20 - FFCCC lost to Fushnikins and they go on to win the Cup! - In a tourney where we had one poor game it cost us dearly. After beating Wall2Wall 2-0, then Tri-State (Maryland, WV and PA) 5-1 we left saturday with pumped up chests and feeling good about our performances, and having learned that Fushnikins had lost a game we were clearly now the favorites ~ But it wasn't to be, despite a great start over Fushnikins we missed three good opportunities early on and then the ref gave them a BS free kick when Russ clearly won the ball without fouling and they toe poked it in off the kick and let the air out of our sails. FFCCC never got it going, despite some good play our couple of mistakes got punished and the refs did the rest with one, or maybe two, more goals being offside...lost 5-0!! - The tourney tie-breaker was "goal diff" so we went into the final game versus Cincy Utd needing 12 goals to secure the Cup...we got 5 I think, so Andy Rosebery & Co get the honors... we get to try again next year - Good time had by all, we had a great squad of players, scored some good goals, played some attractive footy and even tried to set a world record for beer drinking. Thanks to Brewmeister Herr Lewis for his draught homebrew selection and special Thanks from the many who enjoyed Doug & Kathy Hoovers hospitality and pool....same time next year.

PUT-IN-BAY - July 12/13 -   Ryan McKinley at mckinleyr@BATTELLE.ORG - house on island will camp entire team - :""what happens in Put-In-Bay stays in Put-In-Bay""""

Fado Cup -  Atlanta July 26/26/27- Pub is HUGE, check out their website http://www.fadoirishpub.com/atlsplash/gallery.html - Fado Columbus sponsoring us so it's only $300 for travel and hotel!.....with all the free beer and food this is just too good a deal to miss!!! - PLEASE contact Terry @ Flash or Scott or Tommy @ Fado ASAP to get your spot on our team -

Pittsburgh area - maybe, August

**2008 Dain Yoder Soccer Tournament.

A little bit about Dain Yoder from Patty, his wife:

"Dain grew up in Clintonville and was an avid soccer player around Columbus,
from practices at the Park of Roses to select league growing up to hard-core
men's tournaments in his 30s. He considered himself an ambassador of soccer
and even started a team to encourage his wife and friends to learn the game.
Dain died unexpectedly in 2005 at age 37. I think he would love that his
name lives on in Columbus connected to soccer and that the money raised from
the tournament helps more kids learn to love the game as much as he did."

Many of you may have known Dain, like many of us he was the proverbial soccer nut, and most old time Flashsters played against him, and even with him, on many occasions. This tournament is a great way we can help give back to the game we all love, plan on playing next year too!

2008 ~ Tournaments are the most fun you'll have playing amateur soccer, especially the out of town ones...we always need PLAYERS and you should help the Managers who help make these event s possible

Windsor June 7/8 - Took great team this year with 4 Dayton boys helping out - Tie opening game 1-1 with Tourney favorites and eventual winners Windsor Teutonia, should have won it but ONE mistake cost us the equalizer - then despite dominating over London and Brantford, both from Ontario, we only scored one off a PK and somehow failed to win...Sunday we took on Toledo, who'd beat both the teams we couldn't and easily ran them off the park 3-1 - good time had by all, same time next year!

Dain Yodor Indoor at All-Stars~ Dain Yoder Tourney Won by Chumba Wumba over FU Too

FU Too were competitive against Fish’s team in the final, Greg's report follows:.  "We were up by a goal early and tied 3-3 at the half, although we missed a 3 v 1 right before the buzzer.  They got up on us early in the second half and then Daniel scored a brilliant goal beating the goalkeeper from way outside, since the GK had come out to get the ball, but it was called back because he slid.  (Daniel also had a brilliant, cheeky chip shot over the GK, too.  I would say it was the goal of the Tourney in my book.)  They went up 7-3, then we closed to 7-5, and then they got a late goal from Hoheisel off the post as our legs grew weary to win 8-5.  Goggins got into it with Daniel at the end, and both lads threatened to get out their handbags before cooling down, otherwise it was a spirited match and fitting end to a friendly tournament to honor one of Columbus' soccer ambassadors, Dain Yodor"" - Good try, lads!  - See ya's next year - THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO PLAYED and helped FU Too and FUFC

2007  ~ here's last years with tourney reports below - 2007

  • Windsor - 35 , June 9 & 10 - Finished 2nd behind Teutonia...it was a great trip!
  • FADO's National - Easton Fields 7 v 7 Open June 23/24 - Flash Win! - A Great Tournament
  • Meindl Eisner - The Akron German Family Society in Kent July 7/8 - 40 lost in semi final
  • Put-in-Bay - 6 v 6 July 28/29 - not going, didn't get accomodation.
  • Columbus Cup - July 21 & 22 - 30   Won It!! - Are we good or what??

CCF Utd win Columbus Cup 2007!!!  - Club Columbus and Flash merged for the 30 Division and go 4 games without loss! - After a strong opening performance that lacked goals despite numerous close calls the lads continued to play smart, attractive football and won their 2nd game rather comfortably over a strong looking Soccer Unlimited. Then on Sunday tied again v Ohio United who led by Mario Cautela gave us his usual passionate display of shouting at refs, but the 1-1 tie was enough to make the Final where we discovered Soccer Unlimited means they have a good supply of talented just 30 something subs to bolster their roster...didn't matter, in what must be the quickest goal in Columbus Cup history Sergio Ibenez hustled them from the kick-off forcing a bad pass that he stole, slipped around their last defender and stormed into the box with a thundering shot, it's one nil to CCFU in under 10 seconds!! - Final ends 2-1 with Eric Vought slotting home a handball PK capping 4 well played games where an almost complete absense of mistakes proves the old adage that mistakes are what kill you... Congratulations to Hans and Terry for capturing a terrific squad...we should do this again!! - CCFU was: Carlos and Eduardo Del Rio, Ryan P, Ryan McK., Doug S, Doug H, Jeff S, Jeff L. Jeff I, Todd H, Aaron H, Chad H, James C, Eric , Jason, Greg C, Greg A, Sergio, Jon2, Russ, Daniel P, Andy H, Rusty, Dave G and Mike M.

40 Flash team bow out in semi's to the German Family Society host team at the Meindal Leisner Memorial Tournament -  Flash represented Columbus in this 7 team 40 event at GFS in Kent, Ohio, the tournament has been played around July 4th for nearly 4 decades. We lost opening game to eventual tournament winners Arsenal but we made the semi finals with two other wins.... everyone had a good time, saw some great footie and no-one got too hurt... Luis Orozco played sweeper for the winners, Arsenal, so give him a back slap when you see him......... same time next year! - Flash squad was Drew Burgess - GK, Mark Bachmann, Spermie, BBarr, Bob Piatka, Dougie Hoover, Doug Dosky, Luis Banderas, Mark Massey, Bucket, Joseph Hayes, Joe and Ed Bonvillian, Diego, Russ Howard, Matt Burger, Jalal, Ward and Terry -- perhaps 19 isn't enough for 11-a-side!

Flash win Fado's Soccer Tournament! - Fado put on a great 7-a-side tournament at Easton complete with freebies, food and beer for players.... teams from DC, Philly, Stamford, Chicago, Atlanta plus Flash and Wolves from Columbus and a Misfits team played Saturday with the two Columbus teams making semi finals on Sunday, Flash win Final 2-1 over Atlanta. Terrific play both days from Carlos in goal helped secure our win but 12 goals from Simon Davis gave him the "golden boot" ($50 bar tab!) and he proved to be the stand-out player over two days. Big thanks to everyone who played, we used 20 players over two days which was a little tough to manage but everyone got playing time and on Sunday when Billy Thompson and his brother Tyler joined us with Bill Gross we fielded a very dominant looking squad.... we won a HUGE trophy which we will leave at Fado in Easton, check it out...pictures will be posted. - Flash squad was Carlos, Jeff Smith, Ryan McK., Sergio, Greg C., Todd H., Mike Manivilovski, Daniel P., Daniel S., three sets of brothers in JB and Charlie Barleycorn, Billy and Tyler Thompson, Simon and Jamie Davis, then Mike and Chris from our premier team with Bill Gross, Eric Vought and Terry ... do you really need that many for 7 v 7??... Check the result, I think so!

Windsor Teutonia Tournament : Results
